Paws, Inc. was established in 1981 by American cartoonist Jim Davis as an outlet for licensing characters from his Garfield comic strip for various merchandise, which had become very lucrative.
In 1994, Paws, Inc. acquired the rights to Garfield from United Features Syndicate, which had syndicated the strip since its inception in 1978, and began producing it with Universal Press Syndicate (now Universal Uclick) distributing.
Paws, Inc. is headquartered in Albany, IN, and today continues to produce the Garfield strip and license the character for merchandise (including, of course, video games).
In 2019, Paws, Inc. was acquired by Viacom.
