Description

Ripple Effect Studios is a game development studio of Electronic Arts located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The company was originally founded as DreamWorks Interactive in 1995 as a subsidiary of the film studio DreamWorks SKG. After a two-year publishing partnership with the studio, during which notable PlayStation titles as Trespasser: The Lost World and the original Medal of Honor were made, Electronic Arts acquired the company in February 2000 and renamed it Electronic Arts Los Angeles (EALA). The team would be best known for continuing the Medal of Honor series, as well as Clive Barker's Undying.

In early 2003, Electronic Arts merged two other studios into EALA: Westwood Studios and EA Pacific. These would form the RTS division that would only be separately mentioned in their games' credits. This team would continue developing games in the Command & Conquer franchise, as well as The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth series.

In January 2004, EALA relocated to a new, custom-designed West Los Angeles campus, which could house an additional 650+ development experts and creative artists.

On 18 November 2009, the core IP team of Pandemic Studios was folded into EALA after the former's closure.

In July 2010, Electronic Arts announced that the studio had been re-branded Danger Close. The trademark for the name was filed on 3 May 2010, while the RTS division was separately rebranded as Victory Games. For its first project using the new name the team worked together with Digital Illusions CE to reboot the Medal of Honor series. Danger Close designed the single-player and DICE did the multiplayer. The new Medal of Honor game was released in October 2010. The studio also contributed to the development of Battlefield 3 (2011) and Bulletstorm (2011). The MoH sequel Medal of Honor: Warfighter was released in October 2012 and was entirely developed by Danger Close.

On 15 May 2013, EA announced to rename the studio DICE LA, similar in name to its other Digital Illusions divisions. Despite rumors that the studio was to work on Star Wars licenses for the company, it immediately focused on the Battlefield franchise as an auxiliary studio. In the late 2010s, it shifted to supporting Respawn Entertainment as well, and was taken over by Respawn Entertainment lead Vince Zampella on 3 January 2020. On 7 July 2021, the studio was rebranded as Ripple Effect Studios, announcing a return to original titles after finishing Battlefield 2042 and a new campus. This ultimately did not occur, and the studio became one of four teams that formed the Battlefield Studios group, alongside DICE, Motive and Criterion when development of Battlefield 6 was started.

On 28 February 2024, some staff of the closed Ridgeline Games was moved to Ripple Effect.
