Description

Vlambeer (Dutch for "bear in flames" or "bear on fire") is the independent studio of the Dutch developer Jan Willem Nijman. It was established on 1st September 2010. At first it consisted of Rami Ismail as well. During most of Vlambeer's history, Nijman was the main designer and Ismail was focused on programming and the business development.

Initially they made flash games to gather funds for their own projects. These commissioned titles were tagged as developed by "Not Vlambeer" and often do not include traces of the Vlambeer names of the developers. Examples of these are Radical Fishing (2010, for Bored.com) and Dinosaur Zookeeper (2011, for Adult Swim). The developers often prototype new ideas and release them to get feedback from players.

The first title released using the studio name was the freeware shooter Super Crate Box (2010). The team also made one of the three promotional indie games for Serious Sam 3: BFE (2011). Their take is called Serious Sam: The Random Encounter and it was released in October 2011.

Other major titles by the studio are Ridiculous Fishing (2013), Gun Godz (2013), Nuclear Throne (2013) and Luftrausers (2014) all for a wide variety of platforms.

After ten years, on 1st September 2020, the studio announced the upcoming Ultrabugs would be the studio's last title after which the studio will close its doors.

On 4th April 2024 Nijman announced he bought Ismail's shared and was now the sole owner of the studio. He also stated wanting to preserve the classic Vlambeer games, and make sure they get the maintenance they need to stay playable far into the future.
