Description

99Things is a minimalist find-the-object puzzle game designed for MS-DOS computers and compatible with DOSBox emulation. It was written in QuickBASIC 4.5 and released as public domain open source software. The game uses CGA graphics at a resolution of 320×200 with four colors, evoking the visual style of 1980s home computer games. Players are tasked with identifying specific objects within grid-based puzzle boards, completing each one either against the clock or at their own pace.

The gameplay is based on locating and selecting items hidden among many similar shapes within a confined grid. Depending on the chosen settings, objects may appear in varying colors, rotated orientations, or persist on screen after being found. The game provides visual and audible feedback for correct and incorrect selections and offers both timed and untimed play options. A record system tracks completion times, accuracy, and streaks of successful finds.

Several modes are available, including Quick Game, 99Things, and Custom. Quick Game presents smaller boards suited to short sessions, while 99Things features larger grids of up to 99 squares, sometimes spread over multiple boards. The Custom mode allows players to modify parameters such as board size, difficulty, color palette, and object rotation. Difficulty levels range from Easy to Insane, adjusting the number of objects, color variations, and complexity of visual arrangements.

The game's design and mechanics were inspired by the Little Things and Doodle Find series of hidden object games released for early touchscreen devices.
