Barbarian Quest: The Rescue

Barbarian Quest is a 1-player arcade game for the TRS-80 CoCo.

Back in the days when the Kingdoms were young, in the land of Lynn, good king Brighton ruled with a kind hand. King Brighton had a fair and generous Queen, a beautiful daughter, Leonore, and a true friend, the good wizard Lothar.

Shannon, King of neighboring Arth, had proposed marriage of his son Griswold to Leonore. King Brighton politely declined. Humiliated, King Shannon called upon demons for revenge. They descended upon Lynn, killing King Brighton and possessing the wizard Lothar.

Lothar, once a kind man, turned into a cruel and heartless villain. He sought the crown and Leonore's marriage for himself, and when refused, stole her spirit, and hid it in both ordinary and magical containers. Leonore became zombie like, spending her days sitting her chamber, speaking to no one.

The Queen, in turn, promised her daughter's hand and the kingdom to whomever could retrieve Leonore's spirit. Many of the land's bravest soldiers have gone to their death, one by one. Finally, you, Hector, an uneducated street brawler, and on of a pig farmer, present yourself to the Queen. It is your turn to take up the quest.

The player controls Hector, who can move sideways, walk, run, jump short, jump long, climb up and down ladders, duck, punch, and stab with his sword. The player can can acquire objects, and must be careful, as Hector can only fall short distances. The player explores different scenes, where he does battle with the minions of Lothar, and tries to recover the 15 objects that contain fragments of Leonore's spirit. There are other evil objects which will injure the player. The player has limited lives, and can take only so many injuries before losing a life. If all lives are lost, the player can restart an area.

There are 4 levels: outside, in the castle, and 2 dungeons.
