Battlezone 98 Redux

Battlezone 98 Redux is a single-player and multiplayer hybrid of real-time strategy and first-person vehicle combat. The game places the player in an alternate history where the space race of the 1960s has expanded into a secret interplanetary conflict. The United States and Soviet Union use experimental hover tanks to compete for control of extraterrestrial bio-metal, a resource that can be harvested and transformed into advanced war machines. Players take the role of a commander who both directs forces in real time and personally pilots vehicles on the battlefield.

The campaign structure combines base management and combat missions. Players build and expand bases by ordering construction units to deploy factories, turrets, and power plants. These facilities allow the production of tanks, scouts, artillery, and utility craft, all made from harvested bio-metal. At the same time, the player remains inside a vehicle, switching between piloting, scouting, and issuing tactical commands through a real-time interface. Survival depends on balancing resource collection, production, and direct combat.

Moment-to-moment gameplay shifts between giving orders and engaging enemies in first-person. Hover vehicles are equipped with cannons, rockets, and secondary weapons, and can be swapped during missions by entering new craft. The player can personally fight enemy forces, escort allies, and disable defenses, while AI-controlled units respond to commands for attack, defense, or patrol.

Multiplayer features include both cooperative and competitive modes. Players can battle each other with custom loadouts, or work together against AI opponents while managing shared bases. A new matchmaking and networking setup replaces the original system, improving accessibility for online play.

This updated release builds upon the community’s unofficial 1.5 patch, incorporating years of fan feedback. It improves AI behavior, fixes technical issues, and optimizes performance. Visuals have been reworked with enhanced textures, lighting, and effects while preserving the original style.
