BitLife

Description
BitLife is a single-player life simulation game. The player begins as a randomly generated character born into a specific country with attributes such as health, happiness, looks, and intelligence. Each life starts at birth, and the player makes yearly decisions as the character ages, shaping their upbringing, education, career, and relationships. The objective is open-ended: a life may be lived conventionally, devoted to wealth or fame, or take darker turns involving crime and misfortune. Every playthrough is distinct due to random events and branching outcomes.
Gameplay unfolds through text-driven menus where the player chooses actions such as going to school, visiting the doctor, applying for jobs, or committing crimes. Each year can advance quickly with a tap of the “Age” button, triggering new scenarios or consequences. Characters can marry, have children, pursue careers, or face imprisonment and early death depending on the decisions taken. There is no fixed win state, and the end of each life is followed by a summary obituary recording achievements, notoriety, and cause of death.
Progression is determined by managing the character’s four main statistics. Health influences survival and longevity, happiness affects daily well-being, smarts determine access to certain careers or educational opportunities, and looks influence relationships and public success. Players can study harder to improve intelligence, work out to raise health, or seek plastic surgery to alter appearance. Success in careers and relationships often depends on maintaining these attributes at high levels.
Career paths include blue-collar jobs, professional tracks such as law and medicine, and creative pursuits like music or acting. Players may also choose a life of crime, ranging from petty theft to organized activities, with risks of arrest or prison. Gambling, business ventures, and property ownership expand the options for accumulating wealth. Characters can retire once they have earned enough or continue until age or circumstance ends their lives. Wealth management allows purchases of houses, cars, or luxury goods, often influencing social standing or family happiness.
Relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and romantic partners must be maintained, with interactions ranging from casual conversations to marriage and divorce. Children can be raised or neglected, and pets can be adopted for companionship. Random events such as illness, natural disasters, or unexpected inheritances create unpredictability, and some lives include rare scenarios like winning the lottery or becoming a celebrity.
Moral choice plays a central role. Players can pursue altruistic acts such as volunteering or donating to charity, or commit destructive behaviors like infidelity, assault, or fraud. Crime may provide short-term wealth but carries heavy risks of imprisonment or execution, depending on the legal system of the character’s country. Dialogue choices within scenarios further personalize the outcomes, as even minor responses can affect long-term relationships or reputations.
