Cross Tantei Monogatari: Motsureta 7-tsu no Labyrinth is a mystery adventure game where the player is an apprentice private detective investigating various crimes. Ken Kurosu lost his mother when he was very young, and his father — a skilled and respected police detective — was killed in a traffic accident when Ken was 11 years old. Now 18, Ken has reason to believe his father was actually murdered, so he seeks out the renowned private detective Tatsuhiko Saeki to become his apprentice, follow in his father's footsteps, and try to solve the mystery of his father's death.

The game is broken into seven chapters, with each chapter representing one case. Investigation is similar to the Ace Attorney games, with the player visiting various locations, investigating suspicious areas with a point-and-click interface, and questioning witnesses by asking them about key words and topics. The game ranks the player on their investigative skills based on how many actions they used to solve each case.
