Cube & Star: An Arbitrary Love
Description
Cube & Star: An Arbitrary Love is a minimalist game about exploration and minor puzzle solving. The player controls a cube that moves horizontally or vertically through a large world that wraps around. At the start of the game one of three perspectives is chosen: data view (almost top-down), spindle view (the world as a globe) or classic view (third-person view). The player's cube is sent into the world by an ancient cube. The game offers 93 tasks that can be completed, shown in a separate screen. These include colouring the world, collecting stars, meeting certain species or resurrecting them, creating buildings and more.
The cube interacts with the world mainly by bumping into things. By touching a tree for instance, fruits and stars are released. Conversations with other characters in the world are started by moving close to them. The game has a large amount of collectibles, such as coins, gems, journal and pieces of history. The world has many dynamic elements as other cubes explore the environment as you do and creatures freely move about. Through various actions the cube is able to influence, colour and populate the world, along with various weather effects and a day-night cycle. Further interaction is provided after discovering four monuments. These provide the abilities Fire, Joy, Logic, Passion. The latter three can be played as notes in a sequence and this leads to different types of effects, introducing new creatures, colouring the world, and raising buildings. Fire can be activated to scorch parts of the environment. There is a large map screen that shows which areas have been explored. Many creatures talk in a secret language that can be deciphered by the player. After quitting the game, you can immediately continue where you left off the next time.
