Das Grosse Deutsche Ballerspiel

Game cover: Das Grosse Deutsche Ballerspiel

Description

Das Grosse Deutsche Ballenspiel (or DGDB) is a Gauntlet variant with a few modifications such as the ability to throw bombs and traps such as lasers. There are a total of 23 levels with the original game. Each level consists of a number of screens, and the aim is to get from the letter A (your starting position) to the letter Z, without running afoul of the prowling monsters or laser cannons. The game can be started from any level as selected on the opening menu.

As in Gauntlet, many of the levels are populated by monsters spawned by generators (or "heads), and the only way of stopping the flow on new monsters is to destroy these. You also have an energy level, which is depleted by running into monsters. If your energy gets below zero, you run into one of the insta-death traps, or you accidentally blow yourself up with explosive, the game ends. But before this happens, you have the option of replenishing your energy a limited number of times.

The game can be played in 1 or 2 player modes. In 2 player, both characters play at the same time. If one dies, the other can revive him by shooting a heart. DGDB was originally released in the public domain, but the level and character editors for the game were sold separately.
