DLC Quest

Description

DLC Quest is a 2D platformer that mocks the use of DLC (downloadable content) for commercial games as a barrier to access a full game experience. The player has to rescue a princess that has been kidnapped by a bad guy. At the start of the game however, many features are missing, such as sound, animation, or the ability to jump or move left. After collecting a number of coins these can be exchanged at a shopkeeper to buy DLC with the in-game currency.

DLC contains useful features such as double jumping, fighting or traversing to a different area, but also cosmetic changes such as very expensive armour for your horse (a nod to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion), DLC that adds zombies as harmless characters, a fancy outfit, a top hat, and even the ability to pause the game. Other contemporary game trends such as grinding for progress are also mocked through "Time is Money" DLC, there is the characteristic swirl animation of enemy encounters in Final Fantasy games, filler NPCs, NPCs nagging with quests, and a DLC pack to unlock an alternate "real" ending to the game. Not all packs are available right away. They become available after triggering them at a location or by discovering treasures. Ultimately the character is able to wield a sword and a gun. There are also a number of in-game achievements.
