Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden

Description

Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden is a single-player and multiplayer 2D fighting game based on the Dragon Ball series. The story mode presents a retelling of familiar battles from Dragon Ball Z, allowing the player to take control of iconic characters such as Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan as they confront major villains like Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu. In addition to these main arcs, the game includes alternative story scenarios and smaller episodes that explore “what if” situations, creating variations on battles outside the original timeline.

Combat is presented as a side-view 2D fighting system. Characters fight within enclosed arenas, chaining light, medium, and heavy attacks into combos, while incorporating energy-based techniques such as ki blasts and signature special moves. Each fighter has a moveset faithful to their abilities from the source material, including transformations or ultimate attacks that can turn the tide of a match.

The roster contains a smaller number of fully playable fighters compared to some other Dragon Ball titles, but this is supplemented with a large number of support characters. These assist fighters are not directly controlled but can be summoned during battle to deliver a quick attack, provide buffs, or disrupt the opponent. Team composition allows up to three main fighters with several support characters, creating combinations that emphasize tactical synergy rather than relying on a single combatant.

Progression occurs through unlocking additional characters and support fighters by completing story chapters, winning matches in other modes, or meeting specific conditions. Each character retains their unique strengths and weaknesses, making roster selection important for countering opponents and adjusting to different fighting styles.

Additional modes include “Adventure Mode,” which places the player on a map where they can select missions, battle enemies, and earn rewards, and “Extreme World Tournament,” which functions as a survival-style gauntlet against increasingly difficult challengers. A free battle mode allows for exhibition matches, while a training mode provides a space to practice combos and experiment with team setups.

Multiplayer is supported through local wireless play on the Nintendo 3DS, letting two players battle each other using their chosen teams. Online multiplayer is not included, keeping competition limited to in-person matches.
