EVE Online

Game cover: EVE Online

Description

EVE Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in a distant galaxy where players pilot customizable ships and shape a persistent universe through exploration, combat, trade, and politics.

Players begin by creating a character aligned with one of the four major empires, each with its own lore and culture. The character creation process includes selecting a bloodline and customizing appearance, but unlike class-based RPGs, all skills are available to any character through time-based training. New pilots start with a basic ship and limited abilities, then gradually progress by upgrading vessels, learning specialized skills, and engaging with the broader universe.

Gameplay is primarily centered on space travel and interaction with other players or computer-controlled entities. Ships can be equipped for a wide range of activities: mining asteroids for resources, hauling goods between trade hubs, manufacturing modules and ships, engaging in piracy, or battling hostile factions. Combat includes both player-versus-environment encounters against pirates and player-versus-player conflicts ranging from small skirmishes to galaxy-spanning wars. Territorial control is a major aspect of the game, as corporations and alliances capture and defend star systems, often resulting in complex political rivalries.

The economy of EVE Online is largely player-driven. Most items, from ammunition to capital ships, are created by players using blueprints and raw materials. The in-game market functions as a real-time economy where supply and demand influence prices, and skilled traders can profit by exploiting regional differences. Mining, salvaging, exploration, and mission running all provide income streams, while market speculation and industrial production allow for more advanced economic play.

Progression is handled through a unique skill training system. Instead of leveling through combat experience, players queue skills that train in real time, even while logged off. This system allows long-term planning, as advanced ships and modules require weeks or months of cumulative training. Skills cover diverse areas, including engineering, navigation, industry, and combat specializations, giving players the freedom to define their roles within the universe.

In addition to individual play, EVE Online emphasizes large-scale social structures. Corporations, the equivalent of guilds, allow players to pool resources, share infrastructure, and coordinate objectives. Alliances of corporations compete for sovereignty in unregulated regions of space, leading to wars that can involve thousands of players and last for months. Diplomacy, espionage, and betrayal are common, adding layers of strategy beyond direct combat.

The game also features structured activities such as agent missions, exploration sites hidden across the galaxy, and faction warfare between the empires. Each provides opportunities for income, reputation gains, or territorial influence. Players who prefer a more solitary approach can engage in these systems without committing to large alliances, while still contributing to the dynamic economy.

Although primarily designed as a persistent online experience, EVE Online evolves through regular expansions and updates that introduce new ships, mechanics, and systems.
