Flash Gordon

Game cover: Flash Gordon

Description

Flash Gordon is a single-player fixed-shooter action game. The player takes the role of Flash Gordon, who ventures into the deadly Spider City where many spacemen have entered but never returned. His mission is twofold: rescue captured spacemen scattered throughout the city’s tunnels and destroy the alien hatching pods that threaten to unleash swarms of spider warriors. Each city conquered brings him closer to cleansing the galaxy of the alien menace.

Gameplay is presented with a dual-screen interface. The top half of the screen displays close-up action, where the player directly pilots Flash’s ship through narrow tunnels and battles enemies. The lower half shows a tactical map of the city. On this map, the player’s ship is represented as a horizontal line, while vertical lines mark hatching pods and crosses indicate Disrupters, dangerous roaming hazards tied to the alien generators.

Flash rescues captured spacemen by touching them with his ship, awarding points and removing them from danger. To destroy alien pods, the player must navigate to their location and defeat the spider warriors that hatch out. Enemies grow in number and intensity if not dealt with quickly. Additional threats include patrol ships, roaming debris, and the Disrupter itself. Generators can be destroyed to temporarily immobilize the Disrupter, but debris is constant, forcing players to move carefully when inside its area.

Combat relies on shooting enemies and environmental targets while maintaining situational awareness on the map. Destroying warriors in succession at a single pod increases point values, while hitting five or more or losing a ship near a pod grants a temporary shield. An audio cue of two beeps signals when the shield is about to expire. Scoring is varied: debris is worth 10 points, patrol ships 25 points, rescued spacemen 70 points, and generators 100 points. Killing warriors grants escalating bonuses, while mistakenly shooting a spaceman results in a 1,000 point penalty.

The game was originally released for the Atari 2600 in 1983 under the Flash Gordon license, though in some regions it was retitled Spider City or Space Adventure. Despite the different names, the gameplay remains the same.
