Gaelco Tuning Race Championship
Description
Gaelco Tuning Race Championship is a 3D racing game with prototype sports cars. It is played in a dedicated cabinet shaped like a rally car cockpit. The player sits in a racing chair, uses foot pedals for acceleration and breaking, and steers with a steering wheel that includes a gear shift. The chair is placed on a platform that contains a motion model that moves along with what happens during the race. The machine contains a digital camera that can be used to take a picture of the driver while competing. There are separate buttons to start the game and change the view as well as an alphanumeric keyboard. There are two game modes: Arcade Race against human or computer controlled opponents, or a Tournament Time Attack mode where the player races along to achieve the best times. Up to four cabinets can be linked for local multiplayer.
While racing in the Arcade Race mode points are awarded for actions such as overtaking cars, skidding through corners, top speed, staying in the slipstream, the final time, the final position and more. These points can be used at a Car Tuning shop in exchange for accessories to customize the car. They include body parts, vinyls, wheels, bumpers, tinted glass and more. In the Tournament Time Attack mode the game allows the player to tune the car, even in the middle of the race, to alter technical conditions such as the aerodynamics, types of tires or suspension. That mode also supports a ghost car to race against the best time.
The game contains four cars and four circuits set in Las Vegas and the surroundings. Borrowing from Gaelco's previous title Ring Riders, the difficulty level directly influences the weather condition for the circuit from dry to wet surfaces. Optionally the cabinets can be connected to the internet to save the records on Gaelco's personal server.
