Hacknet

Game cover: Hacknet

Description

Hacknet is a single-player adventure and hacking simulation game. The story begins with the sudden death of Bit, a renowned hacker who created a security system called HacknetOS. Before dying under suspicious circumstances, Bit leaves instructions for other hackers to follow, and the player is contacted to take over his unfinished work. Guided through messages and contracts, the player investigates networks, explores hidden files, and interacts with underground groups while uncovering a wider conspiracy about Bit’s fate.

Gameplay is presented entirely through a command-line interface resembling a real operating system. Players type in commands to connect to servers, probe for vulnerabilities, and exploit security flaws. Actions include port scanning, brute forcing, and launching exploits, all performed in real time. System defenses, such as trace timers, force players to act quickly and with precision.

Missions are delivered through in-game emails and job boards. Each job has objectives, such as retrieving documents, planting false evidence, or erasing digital footprints. Successful completion unlocks access to new tools and networks. Failure to cover tracks can lead to exposure and mission loss, requiring careful attention to logs and security protocols.

Progression comes through acquiring stronger exploits and utilities that allow access to more complex systems. Some missions involve multi-step puzzles, where players must chain together commands in the correct order to overcome firewalls and proxies. Players encounter rival hackers, factions with their own agendas, and optional side contracts that expand the game’s world. Story threads can diverge based on the groups the player assists or ignores. Exploration of unused servers may reveal hidden lore, Easter eggs, or valuable software.
