Half-Life

Game cover: Half-Life

Description

The canceled port of Half-Life to the Dreamcast would have come with an exclusive bonus campaign: Blue Shift, which puts the player in control of the security guard Barney Calhoun as he tries to escape the disaster at Black Mesa. In addition, the port would have included higher-polygon character models.

Although online multiplayer was not planned to be included with the initial release of the Dreamcast version, an add-on was planned that would have provided online multiplayer via SegaNet. A Havas Interactive representative stated that this add-on would include Half-Life: Opposing Force, Team Fortress Classic, and a version of Counter-Strike, while Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford stated that he had "talked about including Half-Life deathmatch, Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life: Opposing Force deathmatch, and capture the flag, and [...] one or more of the popular Half-Life mods", presumably referring to Counter-Strike.

Originally targeting a summer 2000 release, the Dreamcast port was delayed several times: to September, then November, then 2001. On June 15, 2001, the the same day that the originally-exclusive Blue Shift campaign was released for Windows as Half-Life: Blue Shift, Sierra announced that the Dreamcast port had been canceled due to "changing market conditions". The higher-resolution models that were planned to be included in the Dreamcast port were included in the PC release of Blue Shift as the Half-Life High Definition Pack, though some of the models included in the HD Pack are updated versions of the Dreamcast's models.
