Description

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA – Future Tone is a single-player rhythm game. The game does not follow a traditional story. Instead, the player assumes the role of a virtual concert participant, selecting from a library of Vocaloid songs and helping characters such as Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin and Len, Megurine Luka, Kaito, and Meiko perform by pressing button prompts in time with the music. Each performance is framed as a music video where the player’s timing and accuracy determine the overall success.

Gameplay is based on matching on-screen symbols with button presses on the controller. Notes appear and move toward designated icons, requiring players to hit the correct button when they overlap. Some notes involve holding a button, simultaneous multi-button presses, or directional inputs, and successful completion fills the combo gauge. Songs are graded with scores and ranks based on precision and consistency, with mistakes lowering the overall performance rating.

The game features a large catalog of over 200 tracks, each with multiple difficulty settings. Clearing songs unlocks higher difficulty levels, allowing players to practice at an easier pace or challenge themselves with denser note patterns. Performances are paired with pre-rendered music videos featuring elaborate choreography, and the player’s accuracy determines how smoothly the concert progresses from start to finish.

Secondary systems expand customization and replay. Characters can be outfitted with alternative costumes, known as “modules,” and accessories, which alter their appearance during performances. These can be purchased with in-game points earned from clearing songs, giving players an incentive to replay tracks for resources. In addition, individual songs can be revisited in Free Play mode without restrictions.

Future Tone is divided into two song packs: Future Sound, which focuses on tracks from the Project DIVA handheld and console entries, and Colorful Tone, which compiles songs from the arcade and handheld Project Mirai series. Both packs can be purchased individually or combined into a single large library, with the same core gameplay mechanics across all content.
