Kattobi! Dōji

Description

The video game adaptation of the baseball manga Kattobi! Dōji is a card playing game.

The focus of the game is on the duel between the pitcher and the batter. A card in this game has 6 slots in a 2x3 layout. The 4 slots that make up the top 2 rows are strike zone slots. When playing as the pitcher, at most one of the strike zone slots will be a ball, in which case, the number on the third row is the throw power. A blank card (all empty slots) represents a throw outside the strike zone. When playing as the batter, your cards can contain either "J", "M" or "B" in the strike zone slots. The batting power for M (medium distance) slots is the left number on the card's third row and for J (long distance) slots - right number. A blank card represents a non-swing. When a throw takes place and the played pitcher card is not blank, the ball slot and its corresponding slot on the batter card are compared together. If the batter's slot is blank, it represents a swing and a miss. If the batter's slot is either J or M, its power is compared against the throw power. A power lower or equal power to the throw power represents a botched swings and results in a strike, or sometimes even a flyout. Vice versa, a higher power than the throw power is a called ball. A B slot is a bunt, which circumvents power calculation and results in a called ball. Further power can be added to the power calculation by withdrawing from a player's power pool, represented by the number beneath their portrait. At the beginning of a match, you draw a batter hand and a pitcher hand, both holding 5 cards. Both hands persist through a match and not redrawn when you come back to either batter or pitcher side. Card abstractions of batting and pitching aside, the game follows baseball rules for scoring.

The 2-player same-screen versus mode has a greatly different ruleset: both players' hands are face-up, 7 cards per hand, cursors on both hands automatically loop though both with accelerating speed until both players press A on their respective controller, which make both players play the cards that the 2 cursors land on at the time they stop.
