Mathica
Description
Mathica is an educational point-and-click adventure game in which players explore the fictional village of Numberville while solving a variety of mathematical puzzles. The game blends narrative, logic, and interactive problem-solving in a stylized setting designed to introduce and reinforce key mathematical concepts. It is played from a first-person perspective with fixed environments.
The central plot revolves around a curse cast over the town by the late Professor Alfons Numerus, a once-renowned mathematician who, in his obsession with classical geometry, failed to solve the ancient problem of squaring the circle. In the aftermath of his failure, he trapped his stepdaughter Mathica in the castle Number-Castle and condemned her to continue his futile quest. The player's objective is to lift the curse by proving the impossibility of the problem and thereby freeing Mathica.
To accomplish this, the player must locate a lost formula attributed to mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, which demonstrates the theoretical impossibility of squaring the circle with classical tools. Clues to the formula’s whereabouts are scattered throughout the village, hidden behind puzzles and riddles that must be solved to access new locations, unlock doors, and progress through the story.
Mathica incorporates mathematical challenges from a range of topics, including geometry, algebraic equations, number theory, probability, and combinatorics. These puzzles are accompanied by an integrated educational component that offers explanations and background knowledge, enabling players to learn or refresh the necessary concepts as they play.
