Metaphlist is presented in an opening cutscene as the hottest new game in the year 2297 by a robot DJ Clip who broadcasts from Basile Studio on Space Station A.D.M. across the galaxy. This however is just a framing device for the actual game where a daring pilot and his team pilot are involved in a war against an evil space empire. The pilot has just bee upgraded to the latest starfighter featuring a HERMIS (Hermit Avaionic System) computer, the most advanced technology available. Using this they will take to space to fight swarms of enemies and uncover hidden information.

META-PH-LIST µ.X.2297 is a top-down shoot-em-up with a map system and story cinematics that unlock throughout the game. The background scrolls both vertically and horizontally and the orientation of the player's ship never changes. Instead the player can change the direction of fire, which can rotate the targeting reticle around the ship, allowing the player to shoot in any direction. There are 3 weapons for the HERMIS ship; a projectile shot, a laser that goes through objects and a missile that can lock on as well as shoot enemies above and below the normal game plane. Each of these weapons can be leveled up based on kills accumulated, as well as limited-time attack power-ups for each weapon. The player also has consumable bombs that will put each weapon into hyper mode for a limited time. There is a reload bar for the cooldown of each weapon as well as a shield bar which can absorb several hits.
