Mosquitos
Description
Mosquitos is a gallery shooter set in a Hawaiian tourist resort that becomes overrun by swarms of mosquitoes. The hotel’s owner, Petko, a character who also appeared in titles such as Petko's Gym (1999), hires an extermination specialist named Niki to repel the insect infestation. Niki serves as the protagonist, though narrative elements are otherwise minimal.
The entire game takes place on a single, slowly scrolling screen that displays a stylized Hawaiian landscape featuring palm trees, bungalows, surfboards, and carved tiki statues. The player cannot move independently and instead uses a pistol with infinite ammunition to shoot targets. Weapons must be reloaded periodically, though the process is instantaneous.
Gameplay centers on shooting mosquitoes of varying sizes to score points, with smaller on-screen targets yielding higher rewards. Some defeated mosquitoes drop bombs that clear nearby enemies, while others release green squares: hitting all four before they vanish grants the game’s highest bonus. Additional interactive elements include falling coconuts and tiki statues that periodically trigger hazards. The game session lasts 100 seconds, after which scores are tallied for the leaderboard.
The game includes both single-player and two-player modes, though the latter relies on keyboard controls rather than separate input devices. There are no penalties for letting mosquitoes escape, and no progression beyond the single available screen.
