NHL 09

Game cover: NHL 09

Description

NHL 09 is a single-player and multiplayer ice hockey simulation game. The game updates team rosters and schedules for the NHL and international leagues, and for the first time introduces the Russian Elite League alongside existing professional circuits. The core experience allows players to take control of their favorite teams and compete across full seasons, playoffs, and exhibition matches. In addition to traditional modes, the title introduces Be a Pro, a career-oriented option in which players create or assume control of a single skater and follow his progression from minor league prospect to NHL professional. Unlike traditional team management, Be a Pro limits control to that one player on the ice, requiring positioning, shifts, and tactical play to impress coaches and earn ice time.

A significant new feature is the expansion of online multiplayer. Up to twelve players can compete together in six-on-six matches, with every skater on the ice controlled by a human participant. This extends the Be a Pro concept to a team environment, where groups of players form online clubs and challenge others in ranked or unranked play. Traditional multiplayer options, including head-to-head games and offline matches, remain intact.

Gameplay refinements focus heavily on stick and defensive control. The defensive stick system has been overhauled, making it possible to intercept passing lanes, poke-check with more precision, and tie up opponents without incurring frequent penalties. Offensively, players can now guide both puck and stick with one hand, adding dekes and puck-protection maneuvers to break past defenders and challenge goaltenders. These additions increase the depth of control but also the complexity, leading to the inclusion of an alternate NHL '94 control scheme that simplifies play with fewer buttons and a single analog stick.

Beyond the on-ice action, players can pursue management-oriented modes such as Dynasty, which involves running a franchise across multiple seasons with trades, drafts, and scouting. Season and Tournament options provide more focused competitions, while training modes and practice drills are available to refine specific skills.
