Description

Perfect Dark was a canceled first-person shooter and action game. Revealed at The Game Awards in 2020, the project was conceived as a reboot of the classic Perfect Dark series, originally developed by Rare.

The game was designed as a mission-based, narrative-driven first-person shooter incorporating elements of stealth, immersive sim design, and parkour-style movement. Players would have assumed the role of elite operative Joanna Dark, navigating a near-future world plagued by environmental collapse and corporate conspiracies.

The gameplay emphasized player choice, allowing missions to be approached through stealth, direct combat, or tactical use of advanced gadgets. Joanna possessed tools such as a voice recorder to mimic enemy voices, vision modes to detect foes through walls, and distraction devices. Environmental interactivity was a key focus, with players able to create diversions, engage enemies using firearms and melee, and traverse urban environments via wall-running, sliding, and climbing mechanics inspired by titles like Mirror’s Edge.

A notable design choice was the inclusion of full-body awareness within the first-person perspective, enhancing immersion by allowing players to see Joanna's limbs during traversal and combat. The game's combat also emphasized fluid movement, with Joanna able to smoothly transition between stealth and action.

Perfect Dark was not conceived as an open-world title, instead offering structured missions with multiple infiltration paths and problem-solving approaches, in line with immersive sim traditions. The game drew comparisons to both its series origins and modern genre interpretations, aiming to balance nostalgia with contemporary gameplay standards.

The game was set in a dystopian near-future Earth facing environmental disaster events collectively known as The Cascade, which devastated ecosystems worldwide. The narrative centered around Cairo, Egypt, portrayed as a restored, futuristic metropolis following ecological interventions by mega-corporations.

Central to the plot was Core Mantis, a corporation behind the GEN Network, a technology used to rejuvenate Earth's damaged regions. Beneath these restoration efforts lay hidden agendas, with Joanna Dark—an operative for dataDyne—tasked with uncovering these secrets. Her primary mission involved locating Daniel Carrington, the world's most wanted criminal, hiding in Cairo with a radioactive device.

The reboot presented Joanna Dark as a capable but fallible protagonist, with the story focusing on her personal growth and learning process. Performance capture for Joanna was provided by actress Alix Wilton Regan, with facial likeness based on model Elissa Bibaud. Development History
