Picross e9
Description
Picross e9 is a nonogram puzzle game as part of the long-running Picross e series. Released as the ninth and final entry in the series, the game retains the signature logic-based grid puzzles that challenge players to fill in squares based on numerical clues to reveal pixel art images. It offers a range of puzzle types and difficulty levels, catering to both newcomers and series veterans.
The core mode, Picross, features a total of 150 puzzles spread across various grid sizes, including 5x5, 10x10, 15x15, and 20x15. Players deduce which squares to fill based on numerical clues provided at the edges of the grid, gradually forming recognizable images. As with previous entries, this mode serves as the foundational experience of the game.
Mega Picross returns as a more challenging variant of the standard puzzles. This mode also includes 150 puzzles across the same grid sizes (5x5 to 20x15), but introduces "Mega Numbers"—a mechanic where numerical clues can span two rows instead of one. This twist requires players to adapt their problem-solving strategies and think more broadly about puzzle solutions, making for a deeper and more complex gameplay experience.
The game also includes Micross, a mode consisting of three large-scale 80x80 puzzles. These are not solved all at once; instead, they are composed of smaller 10x10 puzzles organized into an 8x8 grid, effectively turning each Micross puzzle into a mosaic of 64 individual Picross puzzles. Completing these reveals intricate, detailed pixel art and serves as a rewarding long-term challenge for players.
Additionally, Special Puzzles are available for players who have save data from earlier titles in the series—Picross e, Picross e2, and Picross e3—on their Nintendo 3DS device. Each game unlocks five unique puzzles, totaling 15 additional challenges. These puzzles use 10x10 and 15x15 grids.
A notable change in Picross e9 is the handling of the "Free" rule. In prior games, Free Mode was a separate mode where players would not receive penalties or corrections for mistakes. In e9, this concept has been modified into a toggleable rule in the game settings, allowing players to enable or disable error notifications regardless of puzzle type or mode.
