Quantum Moves

Description

Quantum Moves is an educational game, based around quantum physics problems. Developed by the ScienceAtHome team based in Aarhus University, the game serves as a way to crowdsource efficient solutions to problems in quantum science that (according to the authors) can be better solved by human intuition than by automated algorithms.

The gameplay takes place in a one-dimensional landscape, containing one or more "potential wells". A particle is initially confined in a well; the player's task is to properly manipulate the depths and locations of the potential wells so that the particle is transported to the indicated location. As usual in quantum physics, the particle is represented in the form of a wave function, which means that it behaves more like a glob of liquid than a solid object. Thus, moving the particle too fast can cause it to lose its shape or even spill out of the well entirely.

The player is graded on the "fidelity", i.e. how well the shape of the wave function was preserved during the transport. The solutions found by human players are sent to the ScienceAtHome team to help develop new, efficient ways to manipulate quantum systems.
