Riamel: Black Prophecy
Description
Riamel: Black Prophecy is a sequel to the 1992 Amiga game Lords of Time. The player finds himself stranded on the world of Riamel and has to find a way back to Earth.
The game features a character creation system where the player can assign different values to the attributes of Strength (affects combat damage and maximum carry weight), Dexterity (affects ability to disarm traps, pick locks and dodge enemy attacks), Intelligence (affects spellcasting ability), and Health (determines the character's hitpoints). The game uses a classless system where actions are only influenced by a character's attributes, and not by a specific class. Any character can attempt to disarm traps, not only thieves, but characters with low dexterity will have a lower chance of success.
The game has an unusual language mechanic. When the game begins, the player receives a few lessons in the common language of Riamel. If the player manages to pass a short language test, common phrases in the Riamelan language will appear in English during gameplay. If the player decides not to take the language test, they will appear in the made-up Riamelan language, and the player has to figure out their meaning by himself. There are other languages in the game, too, which the player will have to figure out word by word and translate by himself whenever he encounters a phrase in those languages.
The game has two different perspectives, similarly to the original Ultima. Outdoor locations are explored from a top-down perspective while indoor locations like dungeons are explored from a first person perspective. Also similarly to Ultima, the game's dialogs use a keyword system where the player types in a topic he wants to ask an NPC about and the NPC will reply if he knows anything about it.
