Description

Shogi Variants is a single player, freeware game which contains seventeen variations of the game Shogi which is a form of Japanese Chess. The games are grouped into the three categories shown below, the numbers in brackets indicate the size of the board;* Modern Games: Shogi (9x9), Micro Shogi (4x5), Mini Shogi (5x5), Judjin'd Shogi (6x6), Whale Shogi (6x6), Yari Shogi (7x9)

  • Later Games 1200-1800 AD: Tori Shogi (7x7), Sho Shogi (9x9), Wa Shogi (11x11), Chu shogi (12x12), Dai shogi (15x15), Tenjiku Shogi (16x16), Dai-Dai Shogi (17x17), Maka-Dai-Dai Shogi (19x19), Tai Shogi (25x25)
  • Early Games 800-1200 AD: heian Shogi (9x8), Heian Dai Shogi (13x13)

There is an AI opponent for all variants except Tenjiku Shogi however, as at v1.55a when playing on boards 12x12 (Chu Shogi) and larger the AI only plays a weak game. The game has many features including save/load, undo, redo, show legal moves, show which pieces protect/threaten a square and more.
