Players take on the role of Yuri Miloslavsky, a boyar following Russian troops who are marching towards a Moscow that has been captured by Poles.
Yuri visits local settlements, forests and swamps. He fights against enemy soldiers, bandits and wild animals using a melee weapon and a shield. Some quests can also be completed through diplomacy or stealth.
The developers intended to create a historically accurate 17th-century environment.
