The Lab

Game cover: The Lab

Description

The Lab is a single-player virtual reality mini-game compilation. Set in the Portal universe, the player is placed inside a pocket universe storage facility run by Aperture Science. Guided by a personality core and surrounded by test equipment, the player takes part in a collection of experiments, demonstrations, and small-scale activities intended to showcase virtual reality interaction. Each station presents a self-contained scenario, with no overarching story beyond the role of an Aperture test subject exploring these environments.

The compilation consists of several distinct mini-games. A few examples include:

  • Longbow - the player defends a castle gate using a bow and arrow against waves of attackers, aiming with tracked motion controls.
  • Slingshot - allows the player to launch personality cores into stacks of Aperture equipment in a warehouse, combining physics puzzles with destruction.
  • Xortex - a bullet-hell arcade shooter where the player moves a small ship through incoming enemy fire.
  • Postcards - the player explores photorealistic scans of real-world locations
  • Solar System - an interactive model allowing players to manipulate celestial bodies.

Each mini-game emphasizes different aspects of VR design. Some focus on physical accuracy, such as drawing a bowstring or manipulating objects with tracked controllers, while others highlight spatial awareness and immersion. Sessions are brief and self-contained, encouraging experimentation and replayability. There is no progression system linking the games, but each activity records basic performance metrics such as score or completion.

Additional features include light narrative touches and humor consistent with the Portal setting, primarily in the form of robotic commentary. The environments often contain interactive details, hidden responses, or small variations that reward curiosity.
