Toki Tori 2+

Description

Toki Tori 2+ is the fourth main game in the series and just like the previous titles it is a puzzle platformer. There are two major differences compared to the previous games. Toki Tori, the yellow chicken, no longer has items at its disposal to solve puzzles. In addition, the sets of independent levels have been replaced with a large world connected through teleporters. Rather than acting like separate areas, the player can move between them in an unrestricted way once they have been discovered on the overhead map and the level design borrows from the metroidvania genre with different paths where areas need to be revisited. There is also no longer a single goal per level, but larger goals scattered through the world.

The skills have been replaced by two mechanics: whistling and stomping. Next to movement, these are the only actions in the game. Progressing is entirely based through environment puzzles based on interaction with the game world. By whistling Toki Tori can lure animals towards it and use their abilities. Rock crabs for instance form bridges, toads can swallow other creatures and form bubbles that allow the chicken to fly up, and large birds can be attracted to have them take it to their nest. Stomping has a different effect, for instance causing creatures to drop down ceilings, scaring animals away to make them move in another direction etc. There are also ladders and portals to use, and other mechanics such as dropping down into water and then walking over seeds causing grass to grow. Whistles can form sequences of short and long notes and certain melodies trigger one of five specific skills such as a shield or the ability to teleport back to the map. One of these makes a camera appear and it can be used to take pictures of animals that are stored in a Tokidex. The game provides no explanation of the game mechanics and everything has to be discovered through trial and error, with some hints in the environment when a new ability is required.
