Description

WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos is a single-player and multiplayer real-time strategy game with role-playing elements set in the fantasy world of Azeroth.

The story follows the aftermath of the Second War, when the orcish Horde was defeated by the Alliance and the Dark Portal was destroyed. The surviving orcs were placed in internment camps, but a new warchief, Thrall, rises to lead his people to freedom and across the sea to a new land. Meanwhile, the human kingdoms face a mysterious plague that turns the dead into undead servants of the Scourge. The Scourge itself acts under the command of sinister demon lords, who seek to open the way for their Burning Legion to invade Azeroth once more. As the campaigns unfold, players experience the story from the perspectives of four factions: Humans, Orcs, Night Elves, and Undead.

Gameplay combines traditional resource gathering and base building with unit management and tactical combat. Players harvest gold and lumber to construct buildings, recruit armies, and research upgrades. Each faction has a unique set of units, structures, and technologies, emphasizing different strategic approaches. Humans rely on balanced armies and strong defenses, Orcs favor brute force and powerful warriors, Night Elves employ mobility and magical units, while the Undead field necromantic powers and the ability to raise fallen enemies into their ranks.

A central feature of the game is the hero system. Each faction can recruit several powerful hero characters, who gain experience points in battle, level up, and learn new abilities. Heroes can carry items found in missions, purchased from shops, or obtained by defeating neutral monsters, further enhancing their powers.

The single-player portion consists of five campaigns that introduce players to each race’s story and mechanics. Missions range from traditional base-building and large-scale battles to smaller scenarios focused on exploration and hero progression. Neutral units inhabit many maps, providing opportunities for heroes to gain experience and items outside of main objectives.

Multiplayer and skirmish modes support up to twelve players across a variety of maps. Players can choose their faction, customize strategies, and compete online or via local network.

WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos was later expanded with WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, which continued the storyline and added new units, heroes, and mechanics.
