X operations

Game cover: X operations

Description

X operations is a Japanese freeware first-person shooter that can be played either offline single-player or multiplayer over the Internet. There is no story to the game, and the player does not take the role of any persistent character from mission to mission. The setting of the game is generally contemporary, with stages taking place in warehouses, military bases, apartment buildings, subway stations, and city streets. Characters and weapons are appropriate for the setting. For example, one mission may have you fighting against AK47-wielding soldiers in body armor and balaclavas, the next you might be facing men wearing suits and carrying MP5s.

The game lacks any sort of progression, as all levels are available at any time. Missions are simply chosen from a list on the main menu, and no weapons or ammo are carried between levels. There are several types of stages, each with their own objectives, such as escorting an NPC to a certain location, or retrieving a briefcase and taking it to the beginning of the map. Each mission is usually short and only takes a few minutes to complete successfully, but there are no mid-mission checkpoints or game mechanics to restore health. Characters generally can only take a few shots before being defeated, and this applies to the player as well. The game features locational damage, with headshots usually being a one-hit kill. That being said, some levels contain zombies or cyborgs that take much more damage before dying.

Players can also create their own maps and missions with an official level editor called X operations TOOLS.
