Description
Atlus is a game brand currently owned by Atlus Co., Ltd. under SEGA. It was originally a game company founded in 1986. During 2010 to 2013, it was a game brand owned by Index Corporation.
Atlus Co., Ltd. was founded in April 1986 in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. Their best-known creation is the Megami Tensei series, one of the largest role-playing franchises in history. The company's mascot is Jack Frost, a popular recurrent demon character from the series. While Megaten has never been as popular as many of its contemporaries, its games are often well received by fans and critics alike, with Shin Megami Tensei often considered a landmark of the series. Besides Megami Tensei, Atlus is also known for their Trauma Center series and several stand-alone games in various genres.
On October 1st, 2010, Atlus Co., Ltd. was merged into its parent company Index Holdings Corporation, which was renamed "Index Corporation" two months later. The name "Atlus" was continued as a game brand. However, following the bankruptcy of Index Corporation, all employees and properties of Atlus were took over by SEGA Dream Corporation, which was renamed to "Index Corporation" at the same time, on December 1st, 2013. The new Index Corporation was renamed to Atlus Co., Ltd. on April 1st, 2014, marking the revival of Atlus as an independent company.
