Monolith Software, Inc. was founded in Japan in 1999 by producer Hirohide Sugiura after he left Square Co., Ltd. and accepted an investment from Namco. Monolith develops video games for various consoles like the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Wii, Nintendo DS, and cellphones.

The company's most popular franchise is Xenosaga.

Since 28 April 2007, when Nintendo acquired 80% of the shares, Monolith Software, Inc. is a Nintendo development studio. Namco Bandai holds 16%.

Not to be confused with the US-based Monolith Productions.
