Astroseries

Description
Astroseries is a free, open source real-time strategy game built on the Stratagus engine. Its gameplay mechanics are generally similar to those in Warcraft II, but the setting is science fiction instead of fantasy.
Set in the twenty-second century, Astroseries tells the story of a conflict between the Imperial Union (I.U.) - a totalitarian world state of the future Earth - and the Nagoran Empire, a warlike and expansionist alien government. There are two single-player campaigns, one for each faction, spanning 16 missions each, and split into several episodes. Action can take place on planetary surface (with several different biomes/climates) or in space, and the objectives range from straightforward destruction of all opposition to capturing or destroying specific targets, or escorting important characters to a certain place, and even bombarding planetary defences from orbit.
Each side has a wide variety of different units: infantry, mobile armour, navy, and of course spaceships. Additionally, non-playable factions make an appearance in some campaign scenarios, with unique units and structures that the player cannot build. Upgrades can be researched to improve certain units' attack strength and armour, and even unlock new abilities or weapons. In some missions, heroes or unique units may join the player's side.
Apart from the campaign, Astroseries offers single-player skirmish matches against AI opponents, and multiplayer games. There is a built-in map editor.
Astroseries was released as freeware by its creator, Alvaro F. Perez. The engine's source code is available per the Stratagus engine licence.
