Aurora 4X

Description

Aurora 4X is a grand strategy space 4X (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) game that has been in development since 2004. It is distributed as freeware but not open source.

Sometimes said to be the Dwarf Fortress of 4X games, the game features gameplay and UI that similarly involve a rather steep learning curve, and its graphics are best described as functional and minimalistic. But also likewise, Aurora 4X features finely-detailed imperial management and combat; RPG-like management of a corps of officers, administrators and scientists; and similar potential for emergent gameplay and storytelling potential.

The game is turn-based, with flexible turn length; turns can be run in any increment from 5 seconds to 30 days. Space combat is modeled after mid-20th-century submarine warfare, with sensor signatures, detection and stealth being crucial tactical elements.

Aurora's universe is generated procedurally on-the-fly; on new game generation, the player can choose to generate AI empires immediately, or generate none and have them have a chance of one generating with each new system explored.
