Canabalt

Game cover: Canabalt

Description

Canabalt is a single-player endless runner action game. The game takes place in a futuristic industrial city where chaos erupts after a catastrophic event. The player controls an unnamed man in a suit who flees across rooftops as buildings collapse and massive machines loom in the background. His objective is survival, measured by the distance he manages to run before falling, colliding with obstacles, or being overwhelmed by the destruction around him.

Gameplay is controlled with a single input. The runner automatically dashes forward, steadily gaining speed, while the player can only make him jump. Jumps are used to clear gaps between rooftops, smash through windows, or vault over obstacles. Timing is critical: pressing earlier results in short hops while holding the button longer makes higher leaps. There is no direct way to slow down, but the runner’s momentum can be reduced by colliding with objects such as office chairs or large crates.

Each run is procedurally generated, with building heights, distances, and hazards changing every time the game is played. Players must adapt quickly to new layouts, since the environment can include collapsing platforms, cranes, or incoming debris. Unlike many traditional platformers, there is no ending or final level. The challenge lies in setting personal best distances and surviving for as long as possible.

Later versions of Canabalt introduced additional features depending on platform. Some releases included local multiplayer races, alternate visual themes, or music tracks, while others added achievements and online leaderboards.
