Description

Denna is a role-playing game for the TRS-80 CoCo.

After capturing the Castle of Denna, the player and companions were given to wine and song and celebration. So much celebration, in fact, that the overthrown king's stock of ale was depleted, and the player was forced to rummage through the castle for more. Upon discovering a staff with indecipherable writings etched on it, the player brings it back to their inebriated companions. As the companions drunkenly play with the wand, the player finds themself transported to the dark dungeon deep within the bowels of the castle. The player must now escape from the Dungeon of Denna.

At the beginning of each new game, the player rolls a character's strength, agility, physique, and alertness. Statistics determine the player's hit points, combat factor, defense factor, damage modifier, and number of attacks. The player can equip one item at a time, and has eight body parts with individual strength: head, neck, left arm, right arm, chest, abdomen, left leg, and right leg.

While navigating the dungeon, the player can only see the area immediately around them. The player encounters doors which can be trapped, and may be one-way. There are also secret doors that appear identical to walls. The player further encounters stairs that allow them to move up or down levels. Items can be found throughout the dungeon that can be picked up or dropped. Furniture can be encountered, which can be looked in, on, under, or behind for items. Weapons can be wielded or unequipped. Spells can also be picked up and read.

When in combat, the player is provided with monsters' hit points, number of attacks, combat, and defensive factors. Each monster has eight areas to attack with individual hit points and probability to hit. To kill a monster, total hit points or the hit points for a specific area must be reduced to zero. As the player defeats monsters, their experience and combat aptitude increases.
