Dungeon of the Endless

Game cover: Dungeon of the Endless

Description

Dungeon of the Endless is a single-player and cooperative roguelike strategy game that combines elements of tower defense and resource management.

The story begins when a prison transport ship, carrying convicts and guards in cryogenic stasis, crashes on the unexplored planet Auriga. The survivors awaken deep underground, trapped in the wreckage of their escape pod. Their only hope is to ascend through a network of ancient alien ruins to reach the planet’s surface. Each level represents one floor of this sprawling dungeon, where the survivors must defend the power crystal that sustains their life-support systems while fighting through hostile alien creatures and uncovering the secrets buried beneath Auriga’s surface.

Gameplay unfolds in a hybrid of turn-based planning and real-time defense. Each floor of the dungeon is procedurally generated into a series of interconnected rooms. Players open doors one by one, revealing new chambers that may contain resources, merchants, items, or enemies. Managing limited resources (Industry, Science, Food, and Dust) is central to survival. Industry is used to build modules such as turrets or generators, Science enables research of new technologies, and Food heals heroes or levels them up. Dust serves as a unique energy currency: it powers rooms and modules, extending a network of lit, safe zones, while unpowered rooms risk spawning enemy waves.

The heroes, drawn from both inmates and guards, each have distinct combat styles, attributes, and personality traits that influence their interactions. Heroes can be equipped with weapons, armor, and support items, and gain active and passive abilities as they level up. Balancing team composition is essential, since some excel at close combat or healing while others specialize in operating defensive modules or repairing damaged systems. Players can control up to four heroes simultaneously, issuing movement and combat orders in real time, while automated defenses target approaching threats.

Each floor culminates in a high-stakes escape phase: one hero must carry the crystal to the exit while the rest defend against relentless waves of enemies. Success leads to the next, more difficult floor, while failure results in a full team wipe and restart. The tension between exploration and security defines the game’s rhythm - every door opened can bring both opportunity and danger.

Beyond the main campaign, the game supports up to four-player online co-op, allowing players to coordinate defense and resource allocation together. Additional meta-systems include hero recruitment, unlockable ship types that modify starting conditions and objectives, and lore fragments that connect Dungeon of the Endless to the broader Endless universe shared with Endless Space and Endless Legend.
