Gridrunner++

Game cover: Gridrunner++

Description

Gridrunner++ is a remake of the original Gridrunner from 1982. The game is a shoot 'em up game where the player has to blast wave after wave of multi-segmented Centipede-like enemies. Unlike in Centipede or the original Gridrunner, enemies move around the screen in a variety of different ways. The player's spaceship, which is controlled with the mouse, can be moved around freely on the screen which scrolls in multiple directions. Firing is done automatically and continuously. In addition to the regular weapon, there is a special weapon called the Sheppiezapper which can be used once per level.

The player can die by colliding with the enemies or being hit by the bombs they drop. When shot, enemies leave behind pods which will detonate and send out lasers in all four cardinal directions if not shot quick enough. Additional enemy types include drop ships that emerge from screen edges and leave behind a trail of pods and the X-Y Zapper which bounces around in the space beyond the playing field. Occasionally it fires its weapon which is indicated by sparkly golden lines that converge and release laser bolts across the screen.

The firepower of the ship can be increased by collecting sheepies that appear after every few enemies destroyed. Each one increases the bonus multiplier and adds a trail of ghost ships that follow the ship and fire additional forward and rear-firing lasers. When the bonus multiplier maxes out at x9 the next collected sheepie gives a pill, which is a cross-eyed sheep that swoops around the screen killing enemies in its path. Shooting the pill makes it larger and it can emit horizontal and vertical lasers. Sheepies can also be lifesavers. After getting killed, the player can still steer the wreckage as it falls down the screen, and if it touches a sheepie the ship is restored.
