Heading Out

Description
Heading Out is a single-player narrative-driven driving game. The story follows a nameless protagonist who takes to the road across the United States, driven by personal demons and a search for meaning. The player chooses how the character responds to encounters and situations along the way, shaping both the narrative tone and the journey’s progression. Inspired by American road movies and outlaw tales, the experience is structured around a cross-country trip where destinations and outcomes are determined by the player’s decisions.
Gameplay is built around driving sequences across highways, backroads, and stretches of desert and forest. Vehicle handling emphasizes speed management, maneuvering through traffic, and maintaining control during pursuits. Fuel levels, vehicle condition, and resources must be monitored, requiring players to balance fast driving with the need for occasional pit stops. Random events on the road, such as police chases or environmental hazards, challenge players to react quickly. Progression is tied to the road trip structure, where each leg of the journey can branch toward different regions and outcomes. Players can take detours to explore side encounters, avoid threats, or pursue opportunities for additional resources.
Between driving sections, players navigate choice-driven narrative encounters presented through illustrated story panels and dialogue options. These interactions define the protagonist’s personality and influence which branching storylines become available. Decisions may alter the journey’s tone, determine how others view the protagonist, or open alternative routes across the country. Each playthrough can differ depending on the player’s chosen path.
