Game cover: Learning Land 2: Biff's Birthday

Description

Learning Land 2: Biff's Birthday is the second title in a series of educational titles aimed at young children. The Learning Land series was published as a part-work with a new magazine and CD appearing every two weeks. As with all titles in the series Learning Land 2: Biff's Birthday runs directly from the CD, though the player's progress is stored locally, and all activities are mouse controlled. The CD runs full-screen mode which is fixed at 640x480, if the screen resolution is set to anything higher that this it plays with wide black borders around a central window..
All titles in the series are fully voiced and contain four educational activities and a 'Funstation' activity. Completing each of the first four activities earns the player a piece of a jigsaw, called a "Jiggle" because "it makes you giggle". There four pieces to be earned each week but sixteen pieces, or four issues worth, are needed to complete each puzzle.

The story for this issue is that it is Biff's Birthday and he thinks everyone has forgotten, of course they have not forgotten and have arranged a surprise party. The game starts with Biff arriving in the party room and there's an animated sequence in which the characters speak and then introduce their activities.

The activities in this issue are;* Tea-Time Treat: This is a Numbers activity. Tim is in charge of the party food and he has four coloured plates with food on them and he asks questions such as "Which plate has the same number of sandwiches as the red plate?" and Which plate has more sausages than the green plate?". The game is played over two rounds with ten questions per round. It has two difficulty settings

  • Home From Home. This is a Nature activity and it is played with Biff. Biff has been to the zoo and there are creatures there that live on the farm, in the sea or in the jungle. A picture of a creature appears in the middle of the screen and the player has to drag it to the appropriate environment. One complete the player can click on any creature and Biff will say a few words about it.
  • Brilliant Beads. This is a Letters activity that is played over two rounds, it is introduced by Millie. The player is shown a picture with many beads of different colours and shapes in it and on each bead is a letter. Millie asks "'Can you find all the beads with a letter that sounds like 'r'" at which point the player is meant to use the mouse and select all the appropriately labelled beads which are then put onto a necklace
  • Me & My Friends: This is a puzzle activity. Silly old Biff has unwrapped all his presents but he forgot to keep the cards that say who gave him what. One of Biff's friends gives the player clues from which they must identify the present. There are two rounds to play to earn a jiggle piece and each round has ten questions like "The nice lady at the post office gave Biff something to make sandcastles with?" in response to which the player should click on the bucket and spade.
  • Funstation. In this issue the Funstation is a musical one. The player is shown a small keyboard and can click on keys to play notes. There are other controls that change the pitch and the sound as well as a record and a play back option
