Pokémon: Magikarp Jump

Description

Magikarp is infamous for being one of the weakest Pokémon of all, but one thing it does well is leaping into the air. So much so, in fact, that some people train their Magikarp to be the best jumpers around, and enter their Magikarp into competitions against others for fame and fortune. Pokémon: Magikarp Jump is a pet training sim that places the player in the role of one such trainer. After fishing up their Magikarp, the player is tasked with feeding it and overseeing its training sessions, both of which raise a stat called Jump Power, or JP. Players may choose to compete in league matches against other Magikarp at any time, but once Magikarp has reached its level cap, it has no choice but to compete until it either loses a match or earns its trainer a league badge. Once it has achieved one of these two things, it will retire from competing for good. Though the Magikarp will still live in the player's pond, it can no longer be interacted with. The next Magikarp the player captures will grow faster and usually have a higher level cap as well.

Food regularly spawns in the pond, and each morsel can be fed to Magikarp for a small increase in JP. During training sessions, Magikarp uses various workout equipment to raise its JP. Up to three training sessions may be done in a row, after which point one session becomes available every half hour until the player has once again reached the maximum of three. Bonus sessions are granted when the player levels up or Magikarp wins a league badge, and the player may use a Training Soda item to bypass the recharge time on normal sessions. As the player gains levels and earns money, new types of food and training equipment will become available to purchase. Additionally, coins may be spent to upgrade the existing varieties to boost their effects.

Random events, support Pokémon, and pond decorations are features that provide bonuses. Support Pokémon can be earned either through winning league badges or paying premium currency to unlock them, and each one can be called upon to help Magikarp in various ways. After a support Pokémon has used its ability, it will have to rest for a period of time. Events can grant rewards such as JP, food, money, or additional training sessions, but some of them are a gamble. If the player fails a risky event, their Magikarp may lose some of its JP or even be preyed upon by a wild Pokémon. In the latter case, the player will need to start from scratch with a new Magikarp. Decorations can be purchased with premium currency or earned by winning league badges, and up to five may be placed in the pond at a time. In addition to the aesthetic appeal, merely owning a decoration grants a specific passive buff.

A side activity is collecting all the available colors and patterns of Magikarp. Every Magikarp fished up belongs to a basic color family such as Calico or Orange, some of which are rarer than others. As the player's Magikarp levels up, it will grow larger and develop more complex patterns on its body. The Pokédex in this game keeps track of all the different color families and patterns that have been discovered.
