RŌBLOX is an MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) aimed at a demographic of children and teenagers between eight and eighteen. It is a sandbox environment where players can create their own virtual world with different scenarios or games. Other players can join the game and play the designs. The game is mainly browser based, but requires a separate installer for the PC platforms to play or edit, while the mobile versions integrate everything into a single app, but do not provide access to the editor.

The game contains two types of currencies: tickets and Robux. Tickets are the most common and these are earned by participating in activities. Robux is the premium currency. It is used to customize the avatar extensively and buy and sell items. Players can design new items and trade or sell them. It is also possible to implement small fees for games so players have to pay to participate. A lot of the commercial actions to earn money require a premium subscription to become a member of the Builders Club. There are different types of subscriptions with monthly fees.

The catalog contains a large collection of games of many genres, such as puzzle games, racing games, simulations, shooters etc. These are entirely designed, scripted (through Lua) and maintained by players. There is also an extensive amount of fangames with designs, art assets and sounds taken from popular franchises. The game has been under constant development since its release and new features and entire overhauls were added over the years.
