Space Quest

Space Quest is a 1-player arcade game for the VIC-20.

Far in the future, in a time when man's knowledge of space and time has reduced the vastness of the galaxy into a mapped series of accessible quadrants, the freedom of mankind to grow and explore is being threatened by the Microchines. Microchine fighters have recently jumped into the quadrants, and have reprogrammed several exploration ships, such that they travelled to their own doom. The player controls the ship Skye's Limited II, and must end the Microchine danger.

Played on a 10 x 10 grid, the player can hyperspace to different areas. Some of these may contain asteroid fields, and the player must dodge these from a top-down perspective by moving left and right. If the player enters a quadrant with enemy ships, they try to line up a crosshair to destroy the enemy vessels from a 1st-person perspective. The ship has limited fuel, and each jump and battle reduces this. The player refuels at fuel bases, and the player must navigate a treacherous cavern system from a top-down perspective. There are four levels of difficulty.
