Speak & Spell

Speak & Spell is a re-release of the educational spelling toy released in 1978. The gameplay is largely the same, with five modes that make use of a limited vocabulary of 200 words:

• Spell - The system speaks a word and the child must spell it on the keyboard
• Mystery Word - The child must guess a word in a hangman-style game with a limited number of tries
• Say It - The child speaks and types in the word displayed on the screen
• Secret Word - The system generates a secret code based on a word typed by the user
• Letter - The system speaks letters out loud that are typed in

However, the technology underlying the system is slightly different, with the speech recorded and no longer synthesized, and the display is now an LCD, making it brighter than the original. Also unlike the original, the re-release cannot be expanded with additional cartridges.
