Tales of Phantasia

Game cover: Tales of Phantasia

Description

The GBA port of Tales of Phantasia is largely based on the PlayStation remake, with many compromises and some reused elements from the original Super Famicom version while also having its own new content. Fundamentally, the combat controls follow the PlayStation remake but the overall speed of combat has been slowed down. The PlayStation versions of sprites and voice acting (what little that survived the porting process) are reused in this port. However, the intro song was reused from the Super Famicom version instead of the PlayStation version that has new vocals. The world map was also ported from the Super Famicom version instead of the 3D world map of the PlayStation remake. Recruitable Suzu (and her dedicated optional dungeon), cooking feature, run button when not in combat, the final boss' 3rd phase, the Monster List and Collector's Book are kept from the PlayStation remake.

Other content and features that didn't make the cut in this port:

  • All animated FMVs.
  • Face chats.
  • Local co-op feature.
  • Cameo battle with Tales of Destiny's Lilith.
  • Groovy Arche minigame.
  • The Cave of Darkness and Depth of Treantwood optional dungeons.
  • The shortcut to return to title screen.
  • Though not removed on paper, the Manual and Auto control modes have effectively been disabled for the majority of the game since the Technical Ring has been moved back to near the end of the game.

New content in this port:

  • The Chameleon summon. Although having the same name as the Chameleon summon from the Super Famicom version that was removed in the PlayStation remake, Chameleon in this port is different in both visual and gameplay effect, making it a brand new summon in all but name.
  • Chester's bow repair side quest has been moved up to AC 4202 and narratively expanded to involve Brambert and a new NPC: Arsia the Woodcarver.
  • Dwarven Temple: A new optional dungeon entered from the treasury room at the bottom of Morlia Mineshaft. This is also the new method to acquire the Pluto summon.
  • Let's go Arche: Upon finishing the main story, this new mini-campaign will be unlocked when you return to the title screen. In this new mini-campaign, you play as Arche who is given a mission to do as many quests as possible within 5 minutes. Helping her with this objective is Suzu who will teleport Arche and herself back and forth between towns and dungeons. Time spent in conversation, resting in an inn and combat does not count toward the 5-minute deadline. At the end of the mini-campaign, the number of quests you have completed will be counted up and you will receive a different ending depending on the result.
