Description

Voyages of Discovery: Lewis & Clark Expedition 1804 - 1806 is an adventure game with arcade elements for the Apple II

The player takes on the role of Lewis & Clark, as they attempt to be the first group to travel by foot across North America. Played from a top-down perspective, the player starts by visiting Camp Dubois, and filling up on resources for their trip, and also making a quick stop at St. Charles, Missouri. The player must navigate their canoe along a constant rapidly winding river, but can stop and disembark at any time. If they run aground, they are injured. The player must carefully control their ammo, food supplies, health, and gifts. As the player travels down the river, a counter tracks how many miles they have traveled. As the player runs out of resources, they can disembark their vessel and look for areas of abundant game on foot. This introduces an arcade sequence, where deer run across the screen left to right. The player loses a point of ammo with each shot, but gains a point of food for each animal hit. As the player explores land, they can also discover new flora and fauna not currently known to Americans, leading to an increase in their Finds statistic. The player must carefully monitor their food and health, for if these run out the player dies, and it's game over.

As the player travels further, they will meet native tribes whom they can trade gifts with for food and other resources. As winter approaches, the player must deal with the cold, and make camp for the season. Closely following Lewis & Clark's real trip, they meet tribes based upon their real location traveled, and will eventually reach the Rockies and other important geographical features with the goal being to reach the Pacific ocean.
