In the kinetic visual novel id & i, the player follows the story of Seralina (Sera), a young woman grappling with isolation after being abandoned by her online friends. Seeking solace, she moves out from her adoptive mother and into the disparaged Risenshine city district, where she intends to "rot on the computer," supported by weekly charity food drops.

Using stylized and animated text, Sera's internal monologue reveals her struggle with guilt concerning personal hygiene and social norms. When emptying piss bottles during a blackout, her reflection in the bathroom mirror introduces herself as Clarion (Clair). The two develop a relationship that leads to masturbation using a glass shard and — driven by a desire to abandon guilt over societal norms and achieve physical connection — complete and possibly lethal bodily self-mutilation.

The game's narrative progresses through player input, though some emotionally intense scenes advance or even drag the mouse cursor automatically. While a handful of option boxes offer only one choice each, reinforcing the kinetic nature of the story, early in the game, Sera's computer provides in-game internet access. The player can manually enter one of three URLs to uncover details about Sera's past, including her obsession with a pop star and some background information on Risenshine and her former orphanage. Her computer also features an (auto-)clicker mini-game titled Heart/Breaker.
